Augusta Savage the Harp Sculpture Detail:

This famous bronze The Harp sculpture is originally named Lift Every Voice and Sing by Augusta Savage. The original sculpture, measuring 16 feet, was featuring the shape of a large harp. What is striking is that the strings are lined up one by one by 12 black singers of dwindling figures in robes.

And a long arm representing the arm of the god supported the harp as the sounding board of the instrument. Viewing from the front of the harp, you could see a black boy, shirtless, with one knee bent, holding a sheet of music to be played. YouFine as an experienced bronze foundry could make a perfect bronze sculpture replica of the original.

Augusta Savage: Sculptor and Activist

Augusta Savage’s “The Harp” sculpture is a significant work of art that embodies the resilience and strength of the African American community. Created in 1939 for the New York World’s Fair, the sculpture stands 16 feet tall and depicts a harp with 12 strings, each string symbolizing one of the 12 tribes of Israel. The harp’s base is adorned with figures of African American men, women, and children, representing the contributions and struggles of the community.

Augusta Savage, the sculptor behind “The Harp,” was born in Florida in 1892 and faced numerous challenges as a black female artist in a time of racial and gender discrimination. Despite these obstacles, she persevered and became a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance.
