Product Details

Commissioned by a group of prominent New Yorkers, Ward completed this large-scale hunter statue based on a previous, smaller version. The sculpture, made of bronze, depicts a hunter and his hound larger than life-size. Its overall dimensions are: 10 feet wide, 5 feet deep, and 6 feet 3 inches high, with a polished Rockport granite base.

Creation and Exhibition History:

This sculpture was cast by John Quincy Adams Ward in 1866 at the L.A. Amouroux Foundry in New York City at a cost of $10,000. It was exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exposition and later donated to New York City, where it was officially unveiled in Central Park on February 4, 1869.

A Typical American Artwork:

It is located in the southwest corner of Central Park, an area more famous for its monuments to historical figures. This was the first sculpture created by an American artist in Central Park, when the park itself was only 11 years old. “The Indian Hunter,” completed in Central Park in 1869, was well-received and considered a quintessential example of American art, solidifying Ward’s status as one of America’s most famous sculptors.

Naturalism and Emotional Expression:

The unique aspect of this work is that it broke with the conventions of contemporary sculpture, moving away from idealized classical figures and striving to express the theme through naturalism and emotion. To create this piece, Ward even traveled to the Dakota Territory to observe the lives of the Native Americans, aiming for a more realistic portrayal.
