Uranus Statue Features:
Pose and Form: The central figure, an adult male deity, is depicted reclining in a state of repose, his body relaxed and outstretched. His musculature is rendered with fullness and vigor; he is bare-chested, with drapery falling naturally across his legs and onto the base. He wears a wreath of leaves and sports a thick, curly beard, while his facial expression conveys composure and majesty.
Accompanying Figure: A small winged cherub nestles beside him, resting its small hands on the scepter held by the deity. The contrast in scale between the two figures adds a sense of liveliness and dynamism. The deity holds a scepter symbolizing divine power in his right hand, while the base features carved wave patterns and floral reliefs, reinforcing the themes of water and divinity.
Material and Patina: Cast in bronze, the surface has developed a beautiful blue-green patina. It is mounted on a base of carved white marble, creating a striking color contrast between the dark bronze and the pale stone.
Style: A fusion of Baroque and Classicism; the human anatomy is realistically rendered, and the drapery flows naturally. The composition balances movement and stillness, making it ideal for placement in large outdoor courtyards featuring water elements.
Original Designer:
The prototype originated with a group of 17th-century French royal sculptors. François Girardon (1628–1715) led the creation of this series of mythological sculptures. A key artist in the Versailles project under Louis XIV, he excelled in the Classical Baroque style and created numerous statues of Greco-Roman deities for the Gardens of Versailles.
Placement:
The original sculpture is located in the Royal Gardens of the Palace of Versailles, near the Grand Canal. Part of an open-air garden sculpture ensemble, it integrates seamlessly with the palace’s water features and geometric landscaping, serving as a component of the open-air sculpture museum at Versailles.
